One thing that every Muslim wishes to do at least once in his life time is hajj which literally means “to go to a place “ but it actually is the fifth pillar of Islam and holds immense importance in every Muslim’s life.
How did it start? Why do we go to the holy cities of Mecca and Madinah in huge numbers every year .Well let’s just see the history through which hajj has come through and why does it hold such importance for Muslims.
Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) was the Prophet who had built the “kabaah” by the order of Allah. This was the first and only place which is the HOUSE OF ALLAH and every year Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) would come to the holy city of Makkah with his son Hazrat Ismail (A.S) to perform hajj.
The rituals of Hajj are the reflection of the hardships faces by our beloved Prophet Ibrahim(A.S) and his wife and son . These are the events when Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) was ordered by Allah to leave his wife and infant son Hazrat Ismail(A.S) alone in the desert where Hazrat Hajra(A.S) ran back and forth in search for water when Hazrat Ismail(A.S) was crying and by the miracle of Allah almighty a fountain of fresh water sprung from the ground which is now known as the “Aab-e-Zam Zam……………..
Another event is when Hazrat Ibrahim(A.S) was ordered by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail(A.S) and Hazrat Ibrahim(A.S) without any hesitation and not even thinking of disobeying Allah, calls Hazrat Ismail(A.S) and informs him(A.S) of Allah’s order and still Hazrat Ismail(A.S) without any fear of dying gets ready to be sacrificed in the name of Allah. That very moment an animal (according to some scriptures they say it was a sheep) is brought from heavens in place of Hazrat Ismail(A.S) by Jibraeel (AS), the holy angel . This was the test of faith which up to present time we carry out at the event of Eid-ul-Azha…..
After Hazrat Ibrahim’s(A.S), Hazrat Ismail(A.S) carried out hajj each year..
In the time of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) the kabaah was full of idols and idol worshippers were at large in Makkah, the first hajj performed by the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) was in 631CE from madinah to Makkah and at the time of conquering Makkah Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) swept clear the kabaah of all idols and again purified the house of Allah. It was from this point onwards that the hajj became the fifth pillar of Islam hajj was made compulsory in the 9th year of hijra.
The reason hajj became one of the pillars of Islam is because it depicts upon the sacrifices made by our beloved Prophets and the hardships they faced. Moreover each year Muslim brotherhood is strengthened even more when Muslims from all over the world gather at one place and perform the hajj together. There is no poor or rich, black or white, all are one. And Alhamdulillah each year the amount of hajjies (people who perform hajj) increase by the last year. The History of hajj teaches us lessons of sacrifice and steadfastness in the path of Allah.
